MONTANA HOMESTEAD
This early historic property sits in the distinctive Pine Creek area of Livingston’s Paradise Valley. Old-timers from the area say this is one of the first homesteads settled and may have been part of the Shorthill Ranch. Mr. Shorthill was an officer from the Civil War who came to Montana in the late 1800’s to settle after being wounded in battle. One of his daughters married an attorney from Livingston, and her wedding present was the land upon which the original house sits. They built the original house sometime between 1890 and 1900, with the living room being expanded in 1910. There are remnants of tepee rings on the property, and it is rumored that Daniel Boone stayed at the property during his late 70’s. In 1971, renowned novelist and screenwriter William Hjortsberg purchased the property and raised his family here until 1980. Hjortsberg wrote many books in the tower of the house, including “Falling Angel,” which was the basis for the film Angel Heart (1987). William Hjortsberg still resides in Livingston, Montana, and has shared many wonderful memories of his time at the Montana Homestead. In the ’90’s the Hjortsberg family sold the property to a woman from Seattle, who then sold to the current owner who exquisitely remodeled the Victorian home in 1998 while maintaining its original architectural detail and elegance. The 14-acre property commands breathtaking mountain views and offers abundant wooded acreage, with the beautiful Pine Creek flowing through. Capturing the essence of this 14-acre estate are the extraordinary main house, a classic three-stall horse barn with hayloft, tack room and corrals, wood-burning sauna (which was originally the coal house), impeccable gardens, and the charming furnished guest cabin located across the creek. Tucked away in the forested Pine Creek area of Paradise Valley, offering mature trees and lush landscapes that provide wind break, this estate is in one of the most desirable regions of Montana. With easy access to the Yellowstone River, National Forest, a multitude of recreational activities, and the vibrant downtown Livingston, this Montana Homestead is a masterpiece of luxury mountain living.
